IkeaKodiak Robotics is a company working on self-driving technology long-haul trucking. Kodiak Robotics has joined forces with Kodiak to try driverless deliveries from its warehouses. A Kodiak truck, a heavy-duty autonomous heavy-duty Kodiak truck, has been delivering furniture every day from an Ikea distribution centre near Houston to a Dallas retail store. The truck’s backup driver is responsible for picking up the trailer and overseeing delivery. However, the truck can drive itself over long distances on its 300-mile one-way trip.
Ikea hopes this partnership will help them better understand how autonomous deliveries can make long haul trips safer. It could also improve working conditions for their truck drivers. Kodiak trucks are not electric but it is worth noting that they have been used in the past. Study by the UC San Diego(PDF) Tests on vehicles from another company have shown that autonomous trucks are about 10 percent more efficient then their traditional counterparts. According to ForbesBoth companies signed a three month pilot program. If all goes well, they could then sign a multiyear deal to support a few Ikea warehouses and stores.Â
