Barack Obama, the former president, said that he had been “too professorial” in his White House days.

“Look, when I got a little too professorial I would get into trouble. This was when I was standing behind a podium and not when I was speaking in front of people. At times, I could sound like I was giving policy gobbledygook. And that’s not how people think about these issues,” Obama told hosts Jon Favreau, Dan Pfeiffer, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor — all former staffers in his administration.

He said, “They see them as living a day like mine.” How is politics relevant to the things I care most about? My family, my kids. Work that gives me satisfaction, having a lot of fun. Being a buzzkill is not my goal.

The former president agreed with one host who said Obama’s message was “a lesson to the Democratic Party”,

“And sometimes Democrats, right?” He said. “It’s as if people sometimes want to not feel as though they are walking on eggsshells. They just want to know that life is messy, that everyone can make mistakes, and that things can go wrong at any moment.
