Modern smartphones do a remarkable amount of work to ensure that you can call emergency services no matter what the situation may be.
You can use the Emergency SOS feature on your iPhone to call emergency services even when you aren’t able to move.
Here are the basics of Emergency SOS, how it works and how you can make it more accessible.
How to use Emergency SOS with your iPhone
The Emergency SOS feature activates and immediately contacts the local emergency services (usually 911 in the US). There is no need for a SIM card on your iPhone. Most cases don’t even require a cell connection.
It is easy to activate Emergency SOS by simply clicking hereHold down the Lock button on your iPhone and one of its Volume buttons. After a moment, three sliders will appear — swipe your finger to the right across Slider for Emergency CallCall us to schedule a meeting.

Two more Emergency SOS functions are included in the iPhone 14
Two new ways to use Emergency SOS are available with the iPhone 14 series, which includes the iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max.
Crash Detection is the first. If your iPhone detects that you’ve been in a car crash — you come to a sudden stop, there’s a loud sound, the air pressure changes — it’ll offer to activate Emergency SOS. If you don’t respond or don’t know how to, the phone will make the call.
Second is Emergency SOS via Satellite. Apple will soon launch an iPhone 14-compatible system that allows users to call emergency responders from anywhere in the world, even if their cell signal is not available. The system connects you to satellites orbiting the Earth and relays your messages and location back to Earth.
The Emergency SOS via Satellite service will be free for two-years. Apple has not yet revealed how much it will run after that.
Emergency SOS can send text messages to your emergency contacts
Emergency SOS calls go to whatever the local emergency service phone number is — usually 911 if you’re living in the US. However, you can set Emergency SOS for any of your loved ones to be notified when you contact emergency services.
Open the Health app and tap to add an emergency contact. your profile pictureClick the link in the top-right corner. Select Medical IDIf so, EditScroll down until you find the right option. Add emergency contact.
