Houston is home to the nation’s first 3D printed multi-story home

Houston receives the first 3D-printed, multi-level home in the United States. It will go to one lucky buyer, but the builders say it’s part of ongoing research to Automate and streamline construction

Researchers and builders involved in the project stated that if construction goes smoothly, it could lead to 3D-printed multi-family communities with concrete walls that can withstand heavy rains and flooding.

This home will be 4,000 square feet in size and feature unique layers with curved edges. Dr. Hikmat Zerbe with Cive Design and Engineering says 3D printing has become common, but multiple levels add complications.

“Going in two stories is a good idea, as it increases the building’s weight and gravity load. Dr. Zerbe stated that so far, no one has chosen the two-story building.

The first 3D printed home project is the result of a two-year collaboration with Cornell University and several global engineering and construction partners including Hannah Engineering Design, Peri 3-D Construction, and Cive Design and Engineering.

Roberto Montemayor serves as a project manager in the home construction. It could be a great help, he says. Constructing in a simplified mannerThe future of processes

Montemayor stated that the main benefit of the project was to lower labor and physical demands in conventional construction.

HOUSING INDUSTRY INSIDER WARNS US ARE IN A HOUSING FAIRABILITY ‘CRISIS’

This hybrid construction technique combines 3D printed concrete and wood framing. Leslie Lok, Cornell University Researcher and co-founder of Hannah Designs, says that this combination could offer more protection against weather events.

The Texas coast is susceptible to flooding and hurricanes. Lok states that concrete structures are more resilient to hurricane winds and flooding.

She also claims the technology is more energy-efficient.

“It has very high insulation properties and behavior. It will consume less energy. Lok claims that in summer, the air conditioning bills will be lower for the owner.

Although the printer can print for up to 20 hours per day, project managers claim they have cut down printing time in order to be more considerate of neighboring residents.

“It’s going to take probably a 6-month period, but this is not the intention for the future. Dr. Zerbe believes that things will move much faster in the future once everything is clear and all problems are solved.
