He says that “Season 1 was setting up the table for a very bloody meal to come.” EW. “The reason that I wanted to really spend our time doing this is because I wanted everybody to understand who all of these characters were and the long history they had behind them — behind their fathers and their grandfathers — that led us to this point where they end up fighting a civil war against each other.”

He continues, “I’m interested in picking up all the characters that we spent all this time introducing,” he says. How do they react? “That’s the story of season 2 and beyond.”

The penultimate episode showed how the Greens usurped Aegon II as the King in a coup of Westeros after Viserys’ death, while the last episode shows Rhaenrya and the Blacks planning to attack Aegon’s claim. She loses Luke, her son, while this is happening. The finale marks the beginning and end of A Dance with Dragons, as well the Targaryen civil warfare.

House of the Dragon Season 2 has begun Already renewedCondal and he will be writing the scripts. The ending of the season final will show the consequences of Aemond’s actions, which grow in the script to portray how the action has spread to other parts of Westeros.

Condal spoke out about the Targaryen conflict. He said, “I don’t think the Dance of the Dragons would ever have the sprawl of the original Game of Thrones, simply due to North of the Wall/Esso and all the other places that it went.” But certainly the season that we’re writing, the rhythms of this show are going to feel much more like a middle season — seasons 3-6 of Game of Thrones — in terms of its scope and breadth and the number of characters.”

Season 1 was about Rhaenyra and Alicent. Season 2 was about Daemon, Viserys and Alicent. Condal states that the second season “doesn’t fall into that ensemble piece in which you’re following multiple characters.” Although they’re not all at the same time, this is still a story of Alicent & Rhaenyra as well as their families. We won’t suddenly stop telling their stories. It’s just part of the thing. In season 2, the world really opens up and the sprawl increases.

Condal answered the question whether Dance of the Dragons is more than just season 1 and 2 and said that audiences will have different loyalties to certain characters, certain sides, and certain arguments over the course of the series.

He says, “That’s just the nature of it all.” It’s messy, complex, and gray and one family is fighting the other. This is not Starks against Lannisters. This is an extended family fighting for one another. It’s difficult to identify the entrenched sides.

He believes he can understand why fans are looking for a character they can root for. “It’s an escapist fantasy — a good one, I hope,” he notes. But people are searching for the Jedi and Sith, the light and dark sides. They are looking for the elves as well as the orcs. I love it! Star Wars. I love Lord of the Rings. It’s simply not true.
