Hogan unveils education plan to expand career opportunities ‘outside of prestigious universities’

EXCLUSIVE: Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland believes that attending “prestigious colleges and universities” isn’t the only pathway to achieve the American dream.

Instead, the term-limited governor who’s mulling a potential bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination has been focused on expanding career opportunities “outside an expensive four-year college degree” as part of his push to reduce the costs of Post-high school education.

An America United, a pro Hogan public advocacy group, released four guidelines on Wednesday. They are based on steps that the governor of Maryland has already taken. Fox News was first to share the news.

“A good education is the foundation to career success, but there’s a fine line between investing in developing the talents of the next generation and subsidizing needless credentialism on the taxpayer’s dime. Hogan stated in a statement that the American dream doesn’t run through Harvard or other prestigious universities.

In their release, An America United claimed that colleges and universities had developed “bloated administrations that would have been recognizable to federal apparatus subsidizing them.” The release of the plan comes as Hogan addresses the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

FIRST LAWSUIT FILED IN BLOCK BIDEN STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS

According to the pro-Hogan group, “nothing is better than this broken system.” President Biden’sRecent unilateral action to cancel student loan debt up to $10,000. It’s flat out wrong, unfair, and counterproductive to pay off these college debts on the backs of hard-working taxpayers.” The group called Biden’s move “reckless”, and asked Congress to immediately limit the executive’s unilateral student loan forgiveness power.

Republicans were harshly critical of the executive action taken by Biden, even though it was praised by many Democrats.

An America United noted that Hogan initiated a “first in the country successful initiative to remove the four-year degree requirement for thousands of state jobs in Maryland.” The group urges leaders in other states to follow Hogan’s model and for the federal government to expand Pell Grant subsidies — which are limited to students with financial needs — for short-term skills-based training.

An America United emphasizes in its guidelines that the current system “undervalues other post-secondary education which can provide on-the-job training for college graduates and non-college students.” Pointing to Hogan’s collaboration with industries in Maryland to develop job training programs, the group calls for “dramatically expanding the federal government’s Registered Apprentice system to include high-growth industries.”

The group also recommends improving K-12 education career readiness.

An America United released earlier this year proposals on crime and economy that were incorporated into the education guidelines.

Hogan, who is not eligible to run in Maryland’s blue state, has been traveling across the country for fellow Republicans in support of their November ballot. He made stops in New Hampshire in July and August during those travels. He also visited Iowa between the two trips and stopped by the state fair.

The governor told Fox News in July that he will potentially launch a Republican presidential campaign if he sees “there’s a possible road to victory, that there’s a lane and I have an opportunity.”
