Heritage launches $1M campaign against the gay marriage bill during college and NFL football games

EXCLUSIVE: One conservative think tank spent over $1 million to advertise during college and NFL games during Thanksgiving. The aim is to keep a new bill that codifies same-sex marital relationships in place. Out of the end zoneThe Senate will be holding a hearing next week.

The Heritage Foundation is launching its campaign ahead of Monday’s final vote in Senate to approve the Respect for Marriage Act. This would codify the right for same-sex marriage.

Heritage and other conservatives claim the bill is misleadingly named, would not give new rights to same-sex couple and leaves people of faith vulnerable for litigation and other forms of retaliation. 

“America’s religious liberty is under attack with this impending vote in the Senate,” said Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts. “This legislation does not add one additional benefit to same-sex couples in the United States; it’s an attack that sets the stage to take rights away from people of faith. It empowers radical activists to target Americans who can’t in good faith support any other type of marriage than the man-woman union. All the facts are in American citizens’ best interest.”

The group claims that Democrat lawmakers “hurry to cram their far-left agenda into the new Congress next Year,” when the GOP will control the U.S. House of Representatives.

Heritage claims that the 50 Senate Democrats, 12 Republicans and the Senate’s Republicans who voted for the bill to be passed last week are “sneaking.” Heritage fears the law could allow the IRS to remove tax-exempt status from dissenting religious groups.

Senator Pat Toomey, R.Pa., stated it would allow activists the right to sue dissenting faith groups to try to force them to abandon deeply held beliefs about marriage, or close their doors.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-UtahA bill amendment was offered by, to strengthen religious liberty protections. However, the Democratic leadership has so far refused to allow a vote.

“Republican senators claiming the bill protects religious liberty are misleading the public,” said Roger Severino, Heritage’s vice president of domestic policy. Their insincerity is evident by their refusal to accept Sen. Lee’s amended.

The 30-second spot will be shown on local broadcasts during the NFL Thanksgiving Day matchups. It features the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and the Detroit Lions. The ad can also be seen during coverage for four rival college football games: Iowa Hawkeyes against the Nebraska Cornhuskers Friday, Indiana Hoosiers against Purdue Boilermakers Saturday.

The $1.3 million campaign includes digital ads worth $300,000. Heritage Action, the group’s political arm, is responsible for the campaign. It is the largest advertising campaign the group has ever undertaken.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, D-N.Y. said that the bill is “simple, narrowly tailored, yet exceedingly important”, and “as personal” as it can be.

Lee stated, “Religious Americans will face potentially ruinous litigation while the tax-exempt statut of certain charitable organizations and educational institutions will be threatened.” He also said that Lee’s amendment would have “shored those vulnerabilities.”

He stated, “It is a pity it wasn’t included.”
