Here are some ways events in the lives of your grandparents could have an impact on your genes – ScienceAlert

After the discovery of the DNA molecule was made, the nucleic acids code was often considered to be the beginning and the end of genetic inheritance.

It is now known that chemical markings, which are bonded to certain sections of a genome’s genetic sequence, can affect how genes are read and also alter in response to environmental changes. They may also be transmitted from one generation to another.

This is known as transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. It could refer to a pathway by which the health, lifestyle, or environment of parents can have an impact on the health and development for their offspring over the generations.

Although the changes seem obvious, the mechanisms behind them are still not fully understood.

A new study on roundworms shows that a common epigenetic modification may be transmitted through three generations of sperm. This can influence gene activity and development in the ‘grand-offspring.

While evidence from humans remains sparse for such an enduring epigenetic memories, roundworms are a good example.Caenorhabditis elegans) is quite revealing.

“These results establish a cause/effect relationship between sperm -transmitted histone markers and gene expression, development in offspring or grand-offspring.” Susan Strome, a University of California, Santa Cruz cell biologist and molecular scientist.

The most recent study was used C. elegansAs a model organism, to determine whether epigenetic markings in roundworm embryos can be preserved or rewritten and, if so, how they influence gene expression in offspring.

The focus of the experiments was an epigenetic marking on a Histone protein that causes DNA to be more densely packed. This in turn switches off other genes in that area.

The researchers removed the histone markings from the chromosomes.C. eleganssperm was then used to fertilize eggs containing fully marked chromosomes.

Next, they examined gene activity levels in the offspring. They found that genes on chromosomes passed from sperm had not been suppressed.

“Some genes were turned on in an abnormal way and stayed in a state that did not have the repressive marking, while others regained it and the pattern was passed on to their grand-offspring.” explains Strome.

“We think that this DNA packaging pattern could be passed on to many generations if it is kept in the germline.”

These are roundworms, let’s not forget. The epigenetic effects of these translucent creatures have been shown in past research. It has been passed down for 14 generationsAlthough it is wild, this says very little about humans.

It is difficult to separate epigenetic influences from behavioral, genetic, and cultural influences. How can we begin to distinguish genetics from socio-environmental conditions and environmental conditions that have lasted generations?

Strome and co-workers believe animal studies such as this are important in “illuminating the role of epigenetic inheritance in shaping the development and health future generations.” Write in the published paper.

Their findings were consistent with those found in lab-grown mammalian cells. Recent studies have also suggested that sperm inheritance histone markers may also be present in mice.

These parallels could indicate that the mechanism may also be applicable to humans. However, we don’t yet know much about epigenetic inheritance or how it operates across multiple generations.
