Henry Selick, Director talks about ‘Wendell and Wild’ and the ‘charms’ of stop-motion animation

Wendell & Wild The world is a handcrafted place of demonic fun fairs and austere religious academy, as well as snowy graveyards in which the dead await their resurrection. Henry Selick, the director of films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas CoralineHis achievements have made him a legend in stop-motion animation.

Wendell & Wild Selick’s first feature movie in 13 years is here, and it’s a great return. Every element of the story is covered, from the surreal Scream Fair in the belly of a giant demon to Kat’s (voiced primarily by Lyric Ross), Afro-punk outfits. Wendell & Wild The movie is full of incredible details and care. This movie shows you the power and beauty of stop motion.

Selick came into the world with a special emphasis on the work and dedication of animators. Wendell & Wild. “Since CoralineIn a video interview, Selick stated that stop motion had gotten a lot too perfect and CG-like over the past 13 years. “Me and the animation supervisors for this — Jeff Riley and Malcolm Lamont — we wanted to pull it back to feel more handmade, to make it very clear that this was touched by human hands directly, and didn’t go through all these other steps. These animators literally made these characters one frame at time and breathed life into them.

The Scream Fair is now open.

This technique is unique in many ways. Wendell & Wild. Many flashback sequences recall shadow puppetry, while the Scream Fair’s attractions and those who ride them look like they were cut out of paper. Many characters — especially demons Wendell (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (voiced by Jordan Peele) — look like drawings come to life thanks to their exaggerated features.

The seams that run along the faces of characters are perhaps the most obvious. They are essential to the animation process. Selick and his crew use “replacement animating,” which is a method that allows you to create multiple versions of one part of a puppet. For example, an arm or a leg. You replace different parts of the puppet to capture different actions. For The Nightmare Before ChristmasJack Skellington was replaced by animators to create different expressions. In CoralineFaces were divided in half.

Selick stated, “We decided to split the face in upper and lower halves so that we could have different combinations of eyebrows and squinted eye with different mouths.”

Sewns were used in the splitting of characters’ faces. Coraline, too. Selick tried to include them but Laika, the studio, was too scared about showing them.” he stated. However, they are now in Wendell & WildAs evidence of Selick, Riley and Lamont’s desire for the hand-hewn, the full display of the face seams is a testament to their determination.

Selick calls charm imperfections. “Whenever there was an error [in the movie]I would be asked, “Well, is that charm or a mistake?” Selick explained that if it was a big mistake, we would correct it. “But it was most of the times stop-motion magic. You know what? It’s a real thing.

Ving Rhames voices Buffalo Belzer, the head demon. However, he doesn’t have quite as many facial expressions than Kat. Selick says that “His expressions are not smooth and his face is very expressive.” We made a mistake by restricting his expression range, but it’s still a good fit for his character.

These are moments of charm Wendell & Wild Selick’s desire for humanity and artistic proof shines through in the film’s credits. Post-credit scene. We see footage of the film’s creation, including its massive puppets, as the credits roll. This serves as an ode to both the filmmakers and the team that brought it about.
