Hawley discredits GOP talk of using debt limits as leverage for Social Security and Medicare

Senator Josh Hawley (Republican from Missouri) has thwarted a suggestion that Republican lawmakers might use the analogue. The debt limit fight is on the horizonTo limit federal spending on Medicare and Social Security. 

In Interview with PoliticoPublished Friday, Hawley rejected the idea of some House Republicans to use an impending voting vote to raise the debt limit to leverage Democrats into compromising on entitlement reforms.

“That’s dumb,” Hawley said. “We must do everything possible to keep them solvent.” The idea of playing with them and using that as leverage is absurd. I hope nobody’s seriously proposing that.”

Fox News reported last month that several GOP lawmakers are trying to get leadership positions on influential boards.

House Republicans said in October, the upcoming debt limit fight – a vote to increase the amount of money Congress may borrow to cover its expenses – presents an opportunity to force Democrats to negotiate on reforms to Social Security and Medicare. 

Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia is running for the office. The top Republican on the House Budget Committee. “But, we must look at these programs from a different perspective and find sustainable ways to make them independent. 

These proposals include increasing the retirement age for eligibility or adding means-testing in order to ensure that high-income seniors with private health and retirement plans do not get monopolized benefits. Others suggest imposing work requirements on beneficiaries.

"We're going to make sure that if you've paid into the system, your benefits are not going to be cut," said Rep. Buddy Carter.

“There are more than 70 federal welfare programs. Fox News’ Jason Smith, a Republican from Missouri, stated that the American people believe all federal welfare programs should have work requirements. Smith is running for the House Ways and Means Committee. 

Democrats, including President Biden have taken advantage of these proposals and accused Republicans that they plan to reduce Social Security and Medicare benefits if they win the midterm elections. Republicans running for the presidency this year have distanced their talk about entitlement reform and called the Democratic attacks a distraction. 

On Thursday, however, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), a moderate senator, called for bipartisan compromise in order to reduce spending.

“You’re going to get your financial house in order. Manchin spoke at a Fortune CEO Conference and stated that it was impossible to live with such crippling debt. 

“If we don’t look at the trust funds that are going bankrupt, whether they be Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, highway, all the ones — there are tremendous problems right now,” he added.
