GOP Senate Nominee Repeats Hoax Children Use Litter Boxes

After comedian John Oliver said Republicans were “heartbreakingly stupid” for telling a false story about litter boxes in schools, a GOP Senate candidate repeated the hoax on Thursday at an event held in New Hampshire. CNN Audio. 

While Supporters: in North Hampton, Don Bolduc — who is facing Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan — claimed that children are being told they can use litter boxes in school and are allowed to identify as cats or furries, the news outlet reported.

“Guess what? Bolduc told the crowd, “We have furries in classrooms.” They lick their own fur, they are cats. They hiss when they don’t like something. People run down the hallway, then jump out.

“They are putting litter boxes,” he said. He added that litter boxes are being used for this purpose. “These people are also concerned about spreading germs. They let the children touch everything and then lick their own faces. They are also starting to lick each others.”

CNN reported Bolduc had made similar comments on a radio broadcast earlier in the day. 

On October 16 EpisodeJohn Oliver hosted “Last Week Tonight” and explored Republicans’ attacks upon transgender rights. This included GOP candidates who claim that schools are allowing students to identify themselves as transgender. Furries — people interested in anthropomorphic animals, and often adopt fictitious “fursonas” — to use litterboxes at schools. 

Oliver stated that if children were littering in their classrooms, Oliver would not be the one to break the news to them. “If a kid sh*t in a litterbox in first period, it would be the only thing anyone in that state was talking about by lunch. Minnesota would change its state motto to ‘Minnesota: Y’know, the state where that kid sh*t in a litterbox.'”

Bolduc isn’t the only Republican candidate who has repeated the hoax. It has been proven false since 2021. In March, Sen. Bruce Bostelman of Nebraska, a Republican, apologized for claiming that litter boxes were being used in schools during a televised debate. According to The Associated Press.
