Google acquires AI avatar startup to challenge TikTok

Google quietly acquired a startup which was developing avatars using AI for social media users and brands. According to Alter was recently purchased by the company for $100 million. Google didn’t publicly announce the acquisition for two months. The search giant confirmed the acquisition on Thursday but didn’t disclose the financial terms. According to TechCrunchGoogle purchased Alter to compete with TikTok.

Alter started as Facemoji. This platform allowed other developers to add avatar creation systems into their apps and games. Jonathan Slimak, Alter chief operating officer and co-founder, recently visited. to share he was starting a position “building Avatars at Google.” How Alter’s team and technology could help Google better compete against TikTok is unclear. YouTube Shorts, Google’s take on the short-form video format, is already a success for the company. Follow a Google announced that the platform was available in June 2021. .
