The stakes in Georgia’s 2022 Senate election are significantly lower than they were in 2020. In 2020, Biden, Harris, and Trump held rallies throughout the state. Because Democrats have secured a majority of Senate seats, while Republicans won a majority of House of Representatives seats. This guarantees a split government for two years regardless of the outcome of the Walker-Warnock election.

The Georgia runoff will decide if the Senate is split 51 to 49 for Democrats, or 50-50. If it remains 50-50, Harris will be able to break tie votes in favour of Democrats.
