Georgia Man Says He was Fired after Refusing to Forgive Racial Slur: Lawsuit

  • After refusing forgiveness for the use of a racist slur in his speech, a mechanic claims he was fired.
  • Carlen Loyal (Black) said that he and his brother in law were fired because of “misconduct”.
  • Per a new lawsuit Loyal was questioned by the HR director of the county about why Loyal made such an offensive slur.

A Georgia county sued a Black mechanic for allegedly firing him after he refused to “forgiveness and forget” a coworker’s use racist slur.

A FileAccording to the Department of Justice, Carlen Loyal worked in Bartow County, Georgia, for at least 10 year. He complained to his supervisor about a text message he received from a white colleague using the N-word.

Robin Puryear, the county’s HR director asked Loyal about the offensive word and subjected him to “additional and severe racial harassment infront of the employee who sent that racist text message”. Loyal was then told to “forgive” and “forget” the incident.

Loyal contacted Bobby Turner, his brother-in law, about the incident. This upset Puryear. The filing states that the county fired both men for misconduct two weeks following Loyal’s initial complaint.

According to the DoJLoyal Turner and Turner were exposed to hostile work environments by the county, which violated Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 64.

Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s civil right division stated that “no employee should have to suffer racial harassment and retaliation in their workplace, especially racial insults.”

“Punishing employees who report harassment or discrimination to their supervisors to the police is illegal and weakens basic statutory protections that are designed to detect and root out racial harassing in workplaces across the nation.”

The US seeks to “require a county to create and implement policies that would preclude discrimination and retaliation” and to compensate Loyal, Turner and their families. On Thursday, the men filed a lawsuit against the US District Court Northern District of Georgia.

Insider reached Bartow County for comment but was not able to respond immediately.

Puryear resigned her position in late 2019 Daily Mail.
