Ilkay Gundogan gave Hansi Flick’s side the lead from the penalty spot and Kai Havertz fired a ferocious shot beyond Nick Pope to put Germany 2-0 up.

Luke Shaw, his third England goal for the club, reduced the arrears before Mason Mount equalized with a spectacular effort.

Harry Kane put England ahead when he sent a penalty past Marc André ter Stegen. After a Nick Pope error, Havertz then bundled the ball over to the line.

Kane scored goal number 51 while wearing an England shirt. He expressed his gratitude and sent a message out to fans ahead the finals at Qatar.

“I’ve said all along, judge us on major tournaments. We’ve had two good ones where the fans have been incredible and pushed us the whole way,” he told talkSPORT.

“And we’re going to need the same in Qatar, whether that’s the fans travelling or the fans back home giving us motivation.

“You saw tonight they were incredible, giving us motivation. After going 2-0 down there weren’t any boos or jeers, just pure determination.

“Not just the players but everyone inside the stadium can go away proud as well.

“It shows the character in the team. We were in a similar position last summer and decided to go against Hungary.

“We spoke about not letting that happen again. The lads we have here, we’ve all got great mentalities, we’ve all got great pride wearing the England shirt and I thought you saw that come out in the last half hour.

Wembley was electric, especially in the second half

“The boys who came on did brilliantly, they made a really good impact which is what we’re going to need in tournament football.

“We’ve learned a lot about each other but this will give us some good feelings going into Qatar.”

Gareth Southgate, who was full of praise for his side after the match, echoed Kane’s claims in being delighted with the support the team received.

“I think the result, I don’t know whether to be pleased or disappointed with it,” he told talkSPORT post-match.

Like Kane, Southgate also saluted the support of the England faithful

Southgate, like Kane, also saluted England’s support

“There were so many twists in terms of how the scoring went. I thought that the performance in half one was a bit nervous.

“You could sense the crowd were with us, but a little bit waiting to see how things would go.

“You could feel the stadium explode when the goal went in.

“The crowd were fantastic they stayed with the team, they did not get on their back, they were quiet when we went behind, but did not get on their back.

“The lift they gave us, it showed how connected we are, and it makes a massive difference.”
