French Town Spends $6K for Coats to Keep Kids Warm

Because of the energy crisis, a French town is spending $6,000 on jackets for hundreds schoolchildren. The reason? It’s been freezing in the classrooms.

The mayor of Périers, a small town in the north-west of the country, discussed the plan on French radio station France Bleu. 

In the face of a potential energy shortage this winter, officials in Périers have decided to turn down the heating in public buildings to 19C (66F), Gabriel Daube told France Bleu. He said that temperatures of 19C are bearable but that if it gets very cold, then children would benefit from fleece jackets in classrooms.

Daube claimed that 350 children would receive the benefit. In the interview, he stated that it was akin to a county giving a dictionary or a region giving an computer. “We are giving each student a fleece.”

Daube said, “Students must feel happy in order to learn.”

Daube and Ville de Périers didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment made outside of normal working hours.

Périers, like many other towns and cities in Europe, has adopted energy-saving measures, including turning down the heating, as the continent grapples with short supplies of energy.

These measures are taken by Russia to stop gas supply to Europe via the Nord Stream pipelines. This is after sanctions were imposed on Moscow following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
