“Forspoken” is a next-generation game with an old-gen spirit

What’s old is new again.

Sometimes the world of Video gamesThe constant advancement of technology has outpaced the creation of new ideas. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as proven ideas are proven for a reason and can work for many years, as long as they’re intelligently repackaged with at least one fresh twist. ForspokenSquare Enix’s open-world adventure is now available PlayStation 5The latest example is the PC.

Based on the 45-minute demo that I played, it is clear that ForspokenBeautiful next-generation visuals are paired with fluid traversal abilities in an open world. But in some key ways — chiefly, its straightforward mission design — it feels like a game from 2009.

It could be either a welcome breath of fresh air, or a deal breaker depending on your personal tastes. It helps to set expectations for the exciting and highly anticipated game that is coming from the company. Final Fantasy.

I’m magically parkourin’ here!

In case you haven’t been following along since its initial 2020 reveal as Project Athia, ForspokenFrey Holland stars, a native New Yorker, who is magically whisked away to a fantasy realm called…Athia. She gets a sweet cloak, a talking wrist cuff, and magic powers that she’ll use to navigate Athia, kill monsters, complete seemingly ordinary quests, and find her way back to the Big Apple.

Did I mention that she has a completely sick magic parkour ability?

Trailers are something I’ve seen countless times. ForspokenThis is the mechanic that I want to explore more than any other. Frey uses his power to zoom across Athia’s grassy plains or craggy mountain peaks. It’s incredibly eye-catching and looks fun as hell, even if the design and overall structure of ForspokenIt doesn’t appear too creative.

When I got the game, my first task was to activate parkour mode. There’s hardly any technique to it at all; simply hold the circle button down (I played on a PS5), move in any direction, and Frey’s magic handles the rest. It’s not limitless, however, as you have a magic stamina meter that drains pretty slowly and refills quickly.

But, the most important part of the game is that Works.

It is an amazing experience to zoom in on the entire globe.

Simply sprinting across Athia’s gorgeous fields without a care in the world is a real treat. Hardly anything is an obstacle for Frey when she’s doing this, as she’ll automatically bound over small objects and hop over gaps. She does amazing things! won’tYou can climb up sheer walls by default. But, you can try to fudge the situation by holding the parkour key while jumping repeatedly.

I’m just a sucker for novel, dynamic forms of traversal in games. Give me a big field and a fun, fast way to get from point A to point B, and it’s like catnip for me. You will encounter many enemies and have to complete quest objectives between points A-B. ForspokenYou will either succeed, or fail in this open-world action game.

A glowing ring of fire

Forspoken isn’t just a game about running around real fast. Frey’s newfound sorcery also applies to combat, which I experienced against a variety of monsters including everything from shambling zombie soldiers to flying bats and even a boss fight against a huge, crystalline lizard. We’ll talk about the contexts I encountered when fighting these enemies, which were often very simple and straightforward.

Forspoken is a mix of Prototype & The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion.

The demo gave me access to a large (I’d even call it overwhelming) number of spells. One damage-dealing spell is mapped to the right trigger. The left trigger carries one support spell, which is usually defensive in nature. However, these can be swapped at any time, even during fights. Because spells are mapped with different elements (e.g. lightning or fire), there seems to be a lot of depth to this. Also, enemies have their own weaknesses. If you use some spells in parkour mode, they can be modified or powered up.

In ForspokenYou can use this spell to do anything from throwing rocks at enemies to summoning flaming troops to fight with you. I loved a fire-based spear. It was useful as a melee weapon but, when charged up, it turned into a projectile which stuck to enemies and exploded like an explosion. Halo After a few seconds, plasma grenade was activated. That, combined with a support spell that encircled the immediate area in a ring of fire that increased Frey’s attack power, made short work of a lot of enemies as I plowed my way through its standard open-world missions.

A good fire spell can make your life easier.

The demo’s first half can be found here Forspoken’s combat felt incredibly loose. My default camera sensitivity was too sensitive, which caused me to overshoot my targets. That is, until I realized that there’s a lock-on button. I also couldn’t figure out the rhythm of when I should be zooming around the battlefield or when I should stop and look at things tactically. It finally clicked after 20 minutes of experimentation.

Once I had a grasp of the basics, I was able to hot-swap spells in and outside to exploit enemy weaknesses and steamroll groups of soldiers, and even that big boss lizard, with ease. It all feels very normal. precise, but it doesn’t need to be thanks to that handy lock-on button. Just use Frey’s magic to create as many different kinds of explosions as possible and eventually you’ll come out on top.

It gives Xbox 360 vibes

I’ve seen it done many times in video games.

The biggest takeaway (and greatest concern) of my time spent with you was by far Forspoken It is the way the game structure feels.

There were only a few open-world adventures back in the Xbox 360/PS3 days. These included superpowered protagonists with nimble, acrobatic movements. Think of what you could do. PrototypeOr Famous. While the action was great in the moment, mission design was usually rudimentary.

I’m worried ForspokenAnother one of those games that has a shiny coating of next-gen paint. Each objective felt straight out of 2009. These included clearing an enemy base to “liberate” it, or finding a statue that permanently boosted my magic damage. With its exhilarating movements and magic power fantasy combat, I believe the game will offer more interesting things. DoI will release it when it is out, but the demo didn’t give me much confidence.

The design of Athia is the same. Based on what little I saw, it’s It is reallyBasic fantasy stuff, such as green fields, brown castles and beige rocky areas. Enemy designs outside of the crystal lizard boss didn’t really stand out to me, either.

It has a stale mission design, but a sprawling, fantasy-like world. Forspoken It feels like a combination PrototypeAnd The Elder Scrolls IV – Oblivion

Ice cold

But it’s way more fun, you know.

Perhaps the final version of ForspokenThe story will feature nuanced characters, bustling cities full of NPCs and creative quest design. But there’s also reason to believe it won’t have any of those things. If that’s the case, it might be a fun throwback in a sense, or at least a great Podcast game. You might find it disappointing.

Regardless, you better believe I’m going to use the heck out of that spear spell when ForspokenLaunches in January

Forspoken will make its way onto PlayStation 5 on January 23.
