Following talks, Michael Carrick of Manchester United turns down the Middlesbrough position. Championship club are looking for a replacement to Chris Wilder

Michael Carrick won’t be the next Middlesbrough manager following talks with the club, talkSPORT understands.

The Manchester United legend was the Championship club’s top target to replace Chris Wilder and the former midfielder had entered into advanced talks over the appointment.

Boro are seeking a head coach, not a manager, after Chris Wilder was fired last week.

However, it’s now understood Carrick won’t be the one to take his place, with him not being that enthused by the opportunity.

Carrick, a North East-born worker, has been unemployed since a brief stint as United’s caretaker-boss last year.

Carrick assumed the responsibility for the Red Devils following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, where he was unbeaten in his three games – winning two and drawing one.

However, he chose to leave Theatre of Dreams. Ralf Rangnick joined the Theatre of Dreams on an interim basis through the 2021/22 season.

After almost a year away, he was linked heavily to his first managerial job after speaking to struggling Championship side. Boro.


Since leaving the United, Carrick has enjoyed a break from football.

On Sunday, he was at Goodison Park with his son Jacey. He watched the game. United defeated Everton by 2-1.

Boro and Edwards had initial talks about the vacant job.
