Florida school police arrest an ax-wielding suspect who tried to enter elementary school

Jacksonville’s school police officer shot an ax-wielding suspect who tried to enter an elementary school. After being stopped by police, he refused to give up his weapon.

Dr. Diana Greene, Duval County superintendent, stated to News 4 Jax that the incident took place around 2:48 p.m. Friday. Ruth N. Upson Elementary schoolThe school was placed under lockdown as the man approached it. Burton stated that a school safety officer initially turned the man away and followed him for a short distance, but did not leave campus to ensure security. 

“Police officers of the Duval County School Police DepartmentThey were already on their way. He then made his way towards a Church, where he was encountered by the officers.” DCPS Police Chief Greg Burton explained. 

Burton explained that when the subject was approaching one of the police officers they gave him verbal warnings and kept giving him verbal reminders to drop it.

The man refused to obey and threatened the officer. This prompted the officer “at least one” time to shoot the man. Following the confrontation, the man was left in critical condition.

Two notifications were sent to families regarding the incident as it happened: The first message informed the family that the school had been notified. The lockdown procedure was initiatedDue to “suspicious individual allegedly carrying an Axe outside the school”, but that all students were safe. The second message informed parents that school had “lifted code red for dismissal.”

Mayor Lenny Curry tweeted an update to let Greene know that he had been in touch with him. He said that he was “grateful everybody at the school is safe” and that they are all headed home with their families.
