FIFA president Infantino’s visit to Indonesia was tone-deaf and insensitive

Andi Setiawan was the 133rd victim of official torture. the Kanjuruhan Stadium disasterTuesday, January 20, at 1.20pm

The 33-year-old died at Saiful Anwar hospital in the Indonesian city of Malang, 17 days on from one of the world’s worst football disasters there. Setiawan sustained injuries to his legs, lungs and ribs in the October 1 crush. He spent his final days on a ventilator until his condition worsened.

Later in the day FIFAPresident Gianni Infantino wore white socks, shorts, white socks, a bright blue shirt, and red boots while visiting Indonesia FA (the PSSI), in the wake of the tragedy.

The official photos put out by the PSSI included more than one image of the Indonesian league’s chairman Iwan Bule and Infantino, the head of football’s world governing body, high-fiving each other after what one can only presume was a well-worked move.

However, this was nothing but.

It is an understatement to say that this was offensive.

This was a sickening act by the most powerful man in football.

Tone-deaf, insensitive, disconnected. You name it, it was there. To even use the word “disaster” to describe this PR event feels demeaning to those who truly know the meaning of the word.

The inappropriateness of Infantino’s actions, and that of his hosts, is a huge misjudgement. It is worth examining and amplifying to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
