FIFA labelled ‘embarrassment’ after failing to commit to Qatar World Cup migrant workers’ compensation fund

FIFA has been labelled an “embarrassment” for so far failing to commit to a compensation fund for migrant workers who have been harmed or died in the build-up to the Qatar World Cup.

FairSquare and Amnesty International, human rights groups, called for FIFA to be stopped. In MayTo match $440million World CupPrize money, with an equivalent payment for migrant workers. FIFA said it was “assessing” the proposal but has not yet provided an update.

FairSquare, Amnesty International, and HRW all urged FIFA on Tuesday to create such a fund.

Michael Page, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch said: “It’s an embarrassment that despite prominent footballers, football associations and sponsors supporting the #PayUpFIFA campaign and widespread popular support, FIFA has still failed to commit to calls for a remedy fund for many thousands of migrant workers who died, were injured, or had their wages stolen while making the World Cup possible.
