Exec says Twitter now relies more on AI to identify harmful content

  • Twitter’s trust and safety chief has stated that it is relying more heavily on AI to detect harmful content.
  • Ella Irwin stated to Reuters Twitter that she prefers to restrict distribution over deleting certain content.

Twitter now relies more on artificial intelligence for identifying harmful content. Reuters: A new safety and trust chief has been appointed.

Ella Irwin is the new head for trust and safety at Twitter. This interview marks the first by a Twitter executive since Elon Musk’s October 27th takeover.

Irwin stated that the biggest change was the team’s ability to be fast and aggressive. She said that the company now prefers to limit distribution of certain content than to delete it all.

These comments were made as research has revealed an increase in hate speech on Twitter. 500% increase in N-word usageElon Musk has taken control.

Twitter saw homophobic comments about gay men 2,506 times per week before Musk was elected, but that number rose to 3,964 times each day. The New York Times reported.

According to the report, antisemitic posts that refer to Jews or Judaism increased by more than 60% in the two weeks following Musk’s $44 billion takeover.

Musk’s mass layoffs at Twitter and his haphazard changes have been criticized by politicians and celebrities.

Irwin stated that Musk was a top priority regardless of whether it had an impact on growth or revenue. She told Reuters that Musk emphasizes this every day, multiple times per day.

According to Irwin the team responsible for child safety on the platform has not changed, but Twitter had too fill some of its roles after resignations. She declined to disclose specific figures.

Musk was a billionaire who encouraged her team to take greater risks, move quickly, and make the platform safer,” she stated.

Irwin announced that Twitter will now automatically down tweets involving child safety. These tweets have been reported by trusted figures who have a track history of flagging dangerous posts accurately.

Irwin stated that Twitter had taken down approximately 44,000 accounts that were involved in child safety violations in collaboration with Ghost Data.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Friday that he had a clear and honest conversation with Musk regarding Twitter’s content moderation policies. This was just a day after expressing his concern.

Macron tweeted that he had met with the new owner of Twitter on Friday afternoon to discuss transparency in user policies and significant reinforcements of content moderation and freedom of speech.

Insider requested comment from Twitter but Twitter did not immediately respond.
