Carolina, a former TikTok moderator, worked remotely for Teleperformance in Paris, offering moderation services. She earned $10 per day and had to keep her camera on throughout her night shift, TBIJ reported. She was told by the company that her camera should not be visible and she was limited to having a drink in a transparent glass cup on her desk.

Carolina claimed that the situation was “terrible” as she lived with her parents. “So I felt very guilty telling them to not pass behind the camera as I could get fired. Teleperformance is paranoid due to people seeing what you do.

Insider was informed by a TikTok spokesperson: “We strive for a caring working environment to our employees and contractors. Our Trust and Safety team works with third-party companies to help protect TikTok’s community and platform. We also continue to expand our range of wellness services to ensure moderators feel supported emotionally and mentally.

Teleperformance and TikTok didn’t respond to Insider’s comprehensive list of allegations. Teleperformance has over 42,000 employees in Colombia. Insider did not receive a response to their request for comment.

Current moderators shared with TBIJ that they had to clock in and out and log any breaks on an app called Timekeeper – but they didn’t confirm whether they had to work with their cameras on.

Carlos, a former TikTok moderator said that he was traumatized by a video of child sexual abuse. The video featured a girl aged five to six years old.

Luis, aged 28, worked nights moderating TikTok videos. According to Luis, the type of content he saw regularly included: “Murder and suicide, pedophilias, pornographic content. Accidents, cannibalism.”

He recalls seeing a video of two people holding pieces of meat at a party. It was revealed that they were holding gristle and skin from human faces when they turned their heads. Luis stated, “The worst part was that their friends started playing games and used the human faces as masks.”
