Musk and Jeff Bezos, both of whom own rocket companies, have been fierce rivals for years – and more recently Musk has booted the Amazon founder off top spot as the world’s richest person.
Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000, five years after Amazon was launched.
Musk was quick to follow his lead, and launched SpaceX in February 2002.
The two sides have been at odds over patents, lawsuits and rocket launches throughout the years.
Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance protested SpaceX’s attempt to use a NASA launchpad exclusively in 2013.
Musk claimed that the move was a “phony block tactic”. Space News –Blue Origin “had not yet succeeded in creating reliable suborbital satellites, despite having spent over 10 years in research and development.” SpaceX was ultimately chosen by NASA.
Blue Origin received a patent in the next year for drone ships. These are used to land rocket boosters. SpaceX filed to invalidate the patent. This would have meant SpaceX would have had to pay for the technology. Blue Origin and SpaceX were granted the majority of the patent’s claims by a judge.
Bezos posted a 2015 video on Twitter showing a reusable rocket landing. He called it “the rarest bear.” Musk responded with a sharp response. He said that the SpaceX rocket had been on six suborbital flight three years before and was still “alive.”
Musk also mocked Bezos over allegedly copying his ideas. Amazon announced its plans to launch more satellites than 3,000 in internet communicationsWhen and how to do it Zoox, a self-driving car startup, was acquired. Musk’s electric car firm, Tesla, also works on self-driving technology. However, its vehicles are not yet available for purchase. Not yet fully autonomous.
Bezos for his part Musk’s plans to colonize Mars has been mocked by Musk. He advised that people who wish to live on the red planet to “live on Mount Everest for one year and see if it suits you, since it’s a garden paradise in comparison to Mars,” during a lecture in early 2019
Interview with The New York TimesMusk made comments about his rival in 2020 and seemed to suggest that Bezos was too young to make space travel progress, despite the fact that there’s only seven years between them.
Musk stated that Blue Origin’s progress is slow and that his time left is insufficient. However, he said that Blue Origin is a good example of what Musk is capable of.
NASA awarded $2.9 billion to SpaceX to help humans return to the Moon for the first time since more than 50 years. SpaceX was named the sole beneficiary of the contract in April 2021. Musk later made a joke about TwitterBezos announced that he had resigned as Amazon CEO in July 2021 to “take up a full-time job suing SpaceX.”
Bezos has been fighting Musk to be the richest person in the world since 2021. Bezos held the title since late 2017But Musk overtook Musk for the first-time in January 2021. They have swapped places quite a few times but Musk is still the leader with a fortune estimated at $195 billion. Bloomberg.
Bezos ranks fourth with an estimated $112 billion, just behind Bernard Arnault from LVMH and Gautam Adani of the Adani Group.
