Elon Musk was’really angry’ when Zip2 staff stopped working after 9pm

  • Elon Musk would be furious if Zip2’s employees didn’t work after 9 p.m.
  • Jim Ambras, a former Zip2 worker, said in a BBC documentary that Musk’s “face would turn red.”
  • An ex-Zip2 worker claimed that the world’s wealthiest man knows “just about everything”

According to a BBC documentary, an ex-colleague said that Elon Musk would be furious if employees of his first company didn’t finish work by 9pm.

The Elon Musk Story uses interviews with his family, friends, employees – and enemies – to explain his rise to become the world’s richest man. The UK broadcasted the first episode on Wednesday night.

Jim Ambras, who was a vice-president at Zip2, said Musk would go around the office well into the evening “looking to see who was sitting at their cubes, and there weren’t many people sitting at their cubes – it was 9 p.m.”

Ambras said, “And his face turned ruddy, he was really mad that the whole company wasn’t in the office at nine o’clock at nights,” Ambras continued.

Zip2, an online city guide software for newspapers, was created in Palo Alto in 1995 by Musk and his brother Kimbal. It was originally called Global Link Information Network (1996). Compaq bought it four years later to improve its AltaVista search engine. According to Ashley Vance’s 2015 “Elon Musk, Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future”, Elon and Kimbal netted $22 million and $15 millions respectively.

Branden Spikes, a Zip2 systems engineer, was also interviewed for the documentary. He described Musk as a “unusual” fellow who worked late and then slept under his desk. He described the South African as a “know it-all”, who thought he knew all about everything.

Maye, Elon Musk’s mom, also appears in the BBC documentary. Maye said that Elon Musk was a very sleepy child and would wake up every morning to read books. She claimed that she would dress him when he was still half asleep.

Musk is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, along with two other start-ups: Neuralink (the Boring Company)
