Elon Musk Declares That He Is Creating A Twitter Content Moderation Council

  • Elon Musk stated that he will form a Twitter content moderation council with “widely varied viewpoints.”
  • Musk suggested Twitter ideas, but the body will not make any decisions until it meets.
  • He claimed he was not told about Kanye West’s account being reinstated, which occurred before the takeover.

Elon Musk, who took over Twitter in a $44B deal, announced plans Friday to create a Twitter content moderation council.

Twitter’s new owner TweetThe body would include people with “widely different viewpoints.”

Musk stated that “no major content decisions nor account reinstatements will occur before that council convenes.” Musk added, “To be very clear, we haven’t yet made any changes in Twitter’s content moderation policy.” 

 

The comments made by the billionaire appeared on the day he took overof the social media platform. Musk also suggested other ways content could be moderated. 

Twitter user comments on plans for the council. One user said that Facebook had an oversight board but that it was not pleasing either side of politics.

Musk replied and suggested that users could choose “which version” of Twitter in the future. He compared it to a movie maturity rating. Musk stated that users could choose their tweet rating and it could be modified by user feedback.

Musk tweeted that even though Twitter said it wouldn’t restore accounts before the council meets that those who had been suspended for minor and dubious reasons would be freed from “Twitter prison.”

Another user inquired why Kanye West accountsMusk responded that Ye’s account had been restored by Twitter prior to the acquisition. They didn’t consult or inform me.” 

The rapper is also known by the name Ye made antisemitic commentsThis was earlier in the month, via Twitter. He stated that he would “go death con 3 on Jewish people”, but that he could not be antisemitic because black people are also Jew. Ye was immediately removed from his Twitter account. 

Shibetoshi Nagamoto, creator of Dogecoin cryptocurrency, commented on Twitter’s change in ownership TweetFriday, December 7, 2012: “I’m not sure who needs this, but, death threats don’t fall under protected free speech. They belong in a category called ‘a crime’. So y’know. “You still haven’t got to do that.”

Musk responded to Nakamoto’s comments with a bullseye Emoji.

 

Twitter didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
