Dog tied to a pole by a note that said, “Needs be put down,”

After his story was posted online, many people were moved by the story of a dog that was found tied to a Greenville, South Carolina adoption agency.

Remy was discovered tied to a pole with only a letter that stated: “She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put to sleep as soon as possible.” The Greenville Humane Society posted Remy’s tale on Tuesday.

After Remy was found abandoned and left alone, staff members immediately brought Remy into the office to begin a complete vet exam.

Rachel Delport, Greenville Humane Society CEO, said Remy is doing well. She also mentioned that her staff have shown her affection and given her many opportunities to go for walks in the afternoon.

The shelter’s chief medical officer determined that Remy suffered from a grade 6 murmur in her heart during an examination. This means that Remy’s blood flow is irregular and will require further investigation. Remy could also need lifetime medication.

Remy now has specialist food and therapy to treat her skin sensitivities, after the team discovered she was also having difficulty.

Heart murmurs can cause lethargy, weakness, fatigue, breathing problems, muscle loss, and coughing in approximately 60% of dogs aged over five. A heart murmur is not treatable, but can be managed with the right support. The prognosis can vary.

“It’s different for every patient, but dogs with a grade 6 heart murmur can live a happy and comfortable life, but it can shorten their life expectancy,” Delport added. To determine what next, she will be going to Upstate Veterinary Specialist in Greenville.

Remy is being taken care of by the same humane society that cares for 95 other sick or injured animals. The Healing Place at the Greenville Humane Society is devoted to caring for these creatures, but Delport noted that “recently, we’ve had more sick and injured animals in our care than we have the money for.”

Delport declared, “We want Remy, and every animal in our care, to have a happy and successful life. Although it takes time, money and resources, we are determined to keep them safe. We want every animal to leave our facility in a better place than when they arrived.

Remy receives love and care every day from the Greenville Humane Society employees, but they have started a fundraising effort to pay for her medical expenses.

“We would appreciate for the public to consider a gift to our Hope Fund through our website if they are interested in supporting Remy’s medical care or the other animals in our Healing Place.”
