Dog from Ukraine snoozes in vet’s suitcase beseeching her to stay

Lenny was a stray and feared Dr. Courtney Katsur at first meeting.

Lenny had been on the streets of Ukraine for an unknown amount of time, caught in the war’s sights, but Dr. Katsur didn’t know that. She had seen the effects of war on dogs, and had witnessed them starving. Lenny was badly malnourished and injured when he finally reached an animal shelter.

According to Dr. Katsur who spoke to The Dodo, he was lying near a heater at the time I arrived. After surgery, he was unable to move for two days and had no confidence whatsoever in anyone.

Lenny met Dr. Katsur just a few weeks earlier. She was still living in Virginia while following the war from home. After seeing footage and photos of dogs running wild, she decided to travel to Ukraine.

She was hurt by all the pet owners who had left their beloved pets behind, and the animals who were left homeless after animal shelters closed.

Therefore, she made the decision that her vet knowledge would be applied on the battlefield.

“I realized I could help, you know?”, remarked Dr. Katsur. I’ve never made a greater effort to reach a destination that is unpopular.

She assisted Breaking The Chains in the UK in providing food and medical care to the animals during her two-week trip. Dr. Katsur helped many animals in Ukraine during her two-week tour. Each one of them had a profound effect on her. Dr. Katsur said that she cried when she left them.

Lenny, however, is a dog she won’t soon forget because of how drastically he changed in front of her.

As Dr. Katsur and other volunteers cared for him in their shelter facility, he eventually became trusting and began to feel comfortable living among others.

Dr. Katsur remarked, “[He] jumped and laid in my luggage.” “Previously, he wouldn’t even let a human to touch him, but now he would jump and lay on my cot to cuddle.”

Dr. Katsur was struck by Lenny’s caring and affectionate nature.

Dr. Katsur added, “He made such a transformation. It was unbelievable.

Lenny enjoys living at the shelter, and everyone there loves him just as much, so much so that he has subsequently earned the nickname “the compound dog.”

Lenny “possessed the building towards the end,” says Dr. Katsur. He had complete control over the entire compound.

Katsur is currently in the US soliciting donations and co-ordinating volunteers, but she plans to return to Ukraine in September in order to save more animals.

Dr. Katsur remarked, “Right now I feel like [we’ve] completed about zero-point-one percent of what has to be done.”

Lenny and all other animals needing care are being taken care by Dr. Katsur and Breaking The Chains.
