Doctor Who concluded its season with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor’s regeneration, which saw the return of a familiar face, reported Deadline. Whittaker was the one who gave the wheel to David Tennant in The Power of the Doctor episode, as the series celebrated its 60th anniversary. Whittaker was the first woman to portray the character in the story’s history.

“As Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated on Sunday 23rd October, it was none other than David Tennant who appeared as the Fourteenth Doctor,” said a statement from Doctor Who’s website. This is also the first time in the franchise’s history that the Doctor regenerates into the form of a previous Doctor.

Tennant was the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010. He will now be joined by Catherine Tate, who previously played Donna Noble. The duo’s return has sent many fans into a frenzy.
However, Tennant’s return may not last long as Ncuti Gatwa will take over TARDIS and the franchise in 2023. “If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way!” showrunner Russell T. Davies said in a statement.
“The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! How is this connected to Donna Noble’s return? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”

Screen RantReports indicate that the 60th anniversary specials could focus on Fourteenth Doctor’s efforts to understand why he assumed the Tenth Doctor’s form, before eventually regenerating as the Fifteenth Doctor. In the past, Tennet’s Tenth Doctor helped viewers to be familiar with the franchise, making him one of the show’s most popular incarnations of the Time Lord.
