Disney+ now supports HDR and 4K in the Disney+ app for PS5.

Disney has announced that the latest Disney+ app is now available for PlayStation 5 in 4K HDR. Once you have it installed, you will be able watch all supported Disney content including Marvel and Star Wars movies and TV series in UltraHD or HDR10. The app was originally a port for the PS4 and was limited to 1080p resolution.

Disney’s EVP for product streaming said, “A key component of our global growth strategy is to reach consumers wherever they may be.” The platform can support 4K HDR streaming, which will improve the viewing experience for the fans.

That’s certainly true, but it took Disney long enough — its main streaming rivals Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video have offered 4K playback on the PS5 for a good while now.

Although 4K HDR10 looks great, the PS5 can’t play Dolby Vision and cannot handle Dolby Atmos audio (except for Blurays). But more importantly, using the PS5 (or Xbox Series X) for streaming is a waste of electricity — it Consumes approximately 70 wattsThe latest Google Chromecasts, Roku, and Apple TV devices consume only 3-6 watts. You can download the latest PS5 Disney+ app via the media tab from your PS5’s homescreen.
