Deontay Wester has lost a lot of weight in preparation for his fight against Robert Helenius Saturday night in New York.
Robert Helenius will be the WBC’s former heavyweight champion. It will be his first appearance in the ring since Tyson Fury’s trilogy.
Wilder was weighed in at career heaviest 238lbs (17 stone) as he bulked up to battle the 6ft 9ins Brit.
Now though, as he’s not facing Fury, he has returned to a far more natural weight for himself.
At Friday’s weigh-in, Wilder scaled 214.5lbs (15st 4lbs 8oz).
This is an amazing 23.5 lbs (first 9 lbs 8oz). lighterHe is now more than he was the last time he came out.
Helenius weighed 253.25lbs (18st 1.lb 4oz).
Wilder will not be surprised if the Finnish fighter has a substantial weight advantage in the fight.
Wilder explained why he chose to train lighter during training camp.
“We gained a lot of weight the last fight,” Wilder said, “Just [because] of others’ expectations of seeing my body a certain way.
“And, you know, I was interested in seeing my body frame in a certain weight as well.
“But at this moment in time, I go back to what I’m used to and what’s comfortable to me and what’s comfortable with my body frame.
“And that’s gonna be around maybe 220lbs or maybe under.”
“I felt a little sluggish, a little heavy,” Wilder continued.
“I mean, you gotta understand, I never been 240lbs ever in my life before.
“But it was an experiment that I wanted to try and we did what we had to do to get the weight put on there.
“And, you know, that’s an experience up in the history books for me.
“So, you know, the only way to become wise is apply knowledge to life. And we’ve gained a lot of knowledge from that and now we know what to do leaning forward.”
