Taibbi says Khanna wrote Vijaya Gandde, a Twitter executive, to share his concerns.

Khanna stated in an Oct. 14, 2020 email that there was a “huge backlash against hill re speech.” “I’m open to chatting if you’re interested.”

Khanna wrote that if classified information was hacked or any other information could be used to expose war crimes, the NYT (New York Times), should have the right to publish the information. “Unless they were actively involved in the hack, journalists should not be held responsible for illegal actions taken by the source.”

He added that “to limit the distribution of this material, especially in regard to a Presidential candidate seems not to be in keeping with the principles of NYT v. Sullivan.” He was referring to 1964’s landmark. U.S. Supreme Courtcase that restricts the power of public officials to sue defamation.

At the time, Twitter Safety alleged that the articles were in violation of its “hacked materials policy.” Jack Dorsey was Twitter’s CEO at the time and admitted his company made mistakes. He said that in the heat of a Presidential election, restricting the dissemination of newspaper articles (even though the NY Post is far-right) “seems like it will attract more backlash than it will do good.”

He asked Gadde to keep the communication between them and Dorsey private.
