Democrat Slotkin defeats Barrett in Michigan 7th District House Election

Democratic Rep. Elissa slotkin was reelected against Republican Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.

Decision Desk Headquarters, an Insider’s Elections Partner, called the race at 3:38 a.m. ET on Wednesday, November 9.

At 8 p.m. EST, polls in the state close. Due to the multiple time zones in the state, the first and last polls were closed at 8:45 EST and 9 p.m. ET respectively.

Michigan’s 7th Congressional Representative District candidates

With her 2018 victory over incumbent Rep. Mike Bishop, Slotkin became the first Democrat in Michigan to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District pre-redistricting. That year, she also was one of 31 Democrats to flip a Republican seat in a congressional district that Donald Trump won during the 2016 presidential election. 

She ran unopposed for the 7th Congressional District Democratic Primary in 2022.

Slotkin began his career in foreign affairs before turning to politics. Slotkin, 46 years old, is a lawmaker who speaks both English and Russian. She worked in the National Security Council during President George W. Bush’s presidency and at the Department of Defense under the Obama administration.

Barrett is a member representing District 24 in the Michigan State Senate. There, he serves as chairman of its transportation and infrastructure panel.

Voting history in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District 

Michigan’s 7th Congressional district, which was recently drawn, is located in central Michigan and covers seven counties. The district includes Lansing as the state capital.
