Deion Sanders to Leave Jackson State in Search of $5M Payday in Colorado

  • ESPN reports that Deion Sands is leaving Jackson State, three years after he was the Jackson State head coach.
  • According to CBS, Sanders will join Colorado Buffaloes for an approximately 40% increase in pay.
  • The opinions of football fans aren’t always the same.

Deion Sanders, a Jackson State football coach, is said to be preparing to move to Colorado after just three seasons.

Sources claim that Sanders and others close to him have been “making inquiries at both potential members of his Colorado on-field staff” and to Colorado support staff. ESPN reported. Sanders’ salary at Colorado would start at over $5 million per year — a nearly 40% pay raise, according to CBS News

According to ESPN reports, Sanders was possibly going out of state Friday night in advance of Jackson State’s Southwestern Athletic Conference title match against Southern University Saturday.

Sanders’ departure from SWAC, which is a conference that includes HBCU teams, was met with mixed reactions by college football fans. In his three seasons as Tigers coach, Sanders has been praised for drawing more attention to the conference.

While some criticize the former NFL star for using Jackson State “a launching platform for his coaching career,” others praise him for his new Power 5 position.

This unofficial news has raised questions about recruitment after ESPN was told by a source that Sanders encouraged a “prominent player” in the NCAA transfer portal not to commit to another school until he moved to Colorado.

Similar concerns have been raised regarding Sanders’ son, Jackson State’s quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Sanders may be moving with his father to Colorado. Sanders has never denied the possibility that his son could be brought to school with him.

Under his leadership, the Tigers remained undefeated into the 2022 season. Sanders was awarded the SWAC Coach-of-the Year award in both 2021 & 2022. According to BET.

If he is hired, he will replace Karl Dorrell in the role of Buffaloes head coach. Dorrell was a losing coach for three years, with an 8-15 record.

Colorado fired Dorrell on October 31st and will purchase his contract for approximately $8.7million, according to CBS.

Sanders is believed to be making an announcement about his possible departure from Jackson State following Saturday’s game.

ESPN reported that they weren’t hiding anything. It seemed like it was a done deal.
