Crawley Town were mocked after they announced that a YouTube star might be part of their FA Cup first-round squad.
The club announced that Tobi ‘TBJZL’ Brown, a founding member of KSI’s Sidemen YouTube collective, will join the League Two club in training from November 1, alongside his two brothers Manny Brown and Jed Brown.
Crawley indicated that all three players would be assessed for inclusion in the FA Cup match with Accrington Stanly.
Tobi and Manny were scouted by the club at the 2022 Sidemen FC Charitable Match. The Sidemen had previously announced a partnership.
Preston Johnson, co-chairman of Crawley, said: “We’re excited to have Tobi, Manny and Jed joining us for training on Tuesday, and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can bring to the club.
“Depending on how they perform, we may extend offers to continue training with the lads on a trial basis and potentially compete for a spot on the bench for the Accrington Stanley match.
“As we’ve said before, it’s fairly unlikely they’d get on the pitch unless the game is well in hand, but we want to give them the opportunity to show Lewis and the staff what they can do in training and then go from there.”
This news was not received well by social media users.
One branded it ‘embarrassing’, while another lamented Crawley as a ‘joke’. Another added that it was a ‘pure revenue maker’ and that they will not get on the pitch.
The club has not done this before.
Crawley was founded by reality TV star Mark Wright at the close of 2020. Wright spent six months at Crawley before being let go.
