Comparing the Sporty Electric SUVs

  • To compare the two electric SUVs, I drove both the Tesla Model Y (and the Kia EV6).
  • The Model Y features a minimalist, large interior and an iPad-like touchscreen.
  • The EV6 offers a sporty, more traditional interior, as well as being a great value.

You want to go electric, but you aren’t sure which car you should buy.

There’s Tesla on the one hand. This is the name that’s synonymous in America with electric cars. There are also Electric up-and-comersKia.

South Korean brand is selling one of the most popular and fastest-selling EVs: The EV6 SUV. It’s sleek, sporty, and stylish.

But it can’t stand up to Elon Musk’s wildly popular. Model Y SUV? Both were my choices.

Which is more affordable?

The Kia is priced at $41,400, which is significantly lower than the $65,990 Model Y.

But what about range?

Tesla sells some The market’s longest-range EVs. The base Model Y offers 330 miles — and that’s with efficiency-sapping all-wheel drive as standard.

Kia is catching up with it, offering a solid 310 mile range in its EV6’s $47.500 Wind RWD trim. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the base model with 232 miles, while those with all-wheel drive get 274, while all-wheel-drive models have 284 miles.

What is their charging speed?

The EV6 can charge your electric car in just a few minutes. According to Kia, the EV6 can charge its battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes if it is plugged into an adequate power station. It would take approximately The Y takes closer to 30 minutes.

While Kias still rely on home charging and fast-charging stations from third parties, Tesla owners have the option to plug into Supercharger stations. Common It is extremely easy to use.

What is their driving style?

Both cars have snappy steering, making them more enjoyable to drive than other SUVs. While the Tesla is quicker, it is not as agile. Ride comfort is sacrificed.

The Model Y’s acceleration is phenomenal and can propel you into your seat. Although the EV6 comes with a powerful all wheel-drive layout, I tried the rear-wheel drive model which offers more driving range and acceleration.

How about the interior and cargo space?

While the cars are roughly equal in size, Tesla offers more cargo and passengers space. Thanks to its big glass roof, the Model Y’s interior feels large and airy. Total storage space measures 76.2 cubic yards, which includes a front trunk.

With the seats folded, the EV6 can store 50.2 cubic feet. It lacks a proper frunk.

Some buyers may prefer the Kia’s bold interior to Tesla’s minimalistic, button-free exterior. Model Y should be avoided by those who find it difficult to use a touchscreen for everything.

What does the technology stack up to?

Model Y’s It’s a tech lover’s dream with its large touchscreen. It has fun features, such as video gaming, and more useful ones, like a Sentry Mode that monitors passersby with the car’s numerous exterior cameras. Software updates and new features are regularly added to the system.

Although the Kia has a fast display, it isn’t quite as responsive as the iPhone and has more traditional controls than the Tesla. However, it has two outlets. Provide enough electricity to charge household appliances.

Verdict

It’s a tossup. Both of these electric options are excellent and can be used to satisfy different needs at different prices.

I chose the Kia for its fun driving, fast charging, and almost as much range than the Tesla. It also has more analog controls and is more affordable.

If you prefer a minimal interior, high-tech features, and Supercharger convenience, the Model Y is the best choice.
