Commanders win upset over Packers under Taylor Heinicke; Green Bay loses its third consecutive game

The Washington CommandersThe victory was 23-21 for the Green Bay PackersFedEx Field, Sunday: A gritty performance by the backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, and clutch receptions from Terry McLaurin 

Heinicke got off to a rocky start, throwing an interception early in the second quarter that Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell returned 63 yards for a touchdown, but he settled in late in the second quarter. Heinicke was soon able to find his feet.he Commanders’ offense rattled off 20 unanswered points before Aaron Rodgers hit Aaron Jones for a 21-yard TD pass with just over three minutes left in the game. 

The Commanders were trailing until the third quarter. Heinicke hit McLaurin with a 37-yard touchdown for a lead of 17-14. It was Heinicke’s second touchdown pass of the game after he connected with Antonio Gibson for a score midway through the second quarter on a 9-yard toss. The backup quarterback started Sunday’s game after Carson Wentz was put on injured reserve with a finger injury. He completed 20-of 33 passes for 201 yards. 

Green Bay staged a comeback attempt, but Jones’ touchdown would be the Packers’ final trip to the end zone. The Packers attempted a last-second lateral fest in the final seconds of the game, but the zany play didn’t result in any points as the ball ultimately ended up out of bounds.

Rodgers completed the 23rd of 25 day with 194 yards and two touchdowns. While the Commanders managed 166 yards on the ground, the Packers rushed for only 38 yards. Washington RB Brian Robinson Jr. was the leader with 73 yards and 20 carries.

The Packers did not have a linebacker Rashan GaryHe was a QB pressure specialist in the league and was able to play for a part of the second half. He had been forced to quit the game during the third quarter due to a hit on Heinicke. Later, he was diagnosed with a concussion. Gary had already been hit three times by Heinicke and had taken two tackles before the injury.
Next week, the Packers will visit the Buffalo BillsThe Commanders travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts.
