Gretchen Evans was a CSM and rose to the highest rank of enlisted in the United States. NAMPA, Boise. Army in an era when there weren’t many women in charge of overseeing 30,000 soldiers, but after 27 years, an Afghan rocket explosion put a stop to her career.
Evans was deaf, which was the hardest injury to manage after 46 years hearing. “I came back with injuries that were hard to traverse,” said Evans. It was literally a matter of seconds before I could hear again.
Gretchen and Rusty, Gretchen’s service dog, spoke with a group veterans at Warhawk Air Museum. Gretchen is alerted by Rusty to the sounds around her. This increases her senses of security and gives her advice on independence.

Gretchen Evans is currently touring the country to promote the Dogs Save Lives Campaign through Dogtopia. This dog boarding company helps veterans to raise funds for service dogs.
Evans identifies Dogtopia as the top dog daycare and board facility in the United States.
Dogtopia is a national company that cares for dogs and focuses on three pillars. It recently opened its first Boise location.
According to Dale Goff of Dogtopia, “we generate money to sponsor service dogs, we also raise money to do programs for young reading, and then we have jobs for persons with autism.” We have two younger children we adopted from Russia who are on the spectrum; they are engaged, and we love having them here. It is one of my most important.
Dogs Save Lives accepts donations and shirt sales until Veterans Day. This program benefits veterans such as Gretchen Evans. Evans’ life was transformed dramatically when Rusty was adopted by her.
In the military, we are accustomed to having a battle buddy—the person who has your six—so Evens called it “miraculous.” We miss it when we leave the service, and despite all that Rusty does for me, I believe that simply having him around gives me a sense of security.
