Chromebooks will be tripled supported by Steam beta for Chromebooks

After a long incubation period, Valve’s Steam gaming platform is now available on the beta channel of version 108 of ChromeOS, bringing along improved user experience, broader availability, and greater compatibility with popular gaming titles.

At the start of the year, Valve, a gaming publisher, had been working with the ChromeOS gaming team to release Steam in the Alpha channel of ChromeOS. The beta channel is stabler and more reliable, so more people can test Steam for themselves.

With this release (ChromeOS beta 108.0.5359.24 or greater), Google is tripling the number of supported devices — this time adding support for devices with AMD Ryzen 5000 C-Series and Intel 12th Gen Core CPUs, while lowering the minimum CPU requirement for i3 and Ryzen 3. Also, storage in the Steam environment was reworked through sparse disc and ballooning. This will fix an issue that was preventing games from downloading content from outside Steam. ChromeOS also stated that the ChromeOS team believes this will improve file access performance in Proton games.

There are also some improvements in power management with Steam beta. There are power notifications (when games are running in full screen) to ensure that the gamer doesn’t inadvertently run out of juice in the middle of a game. It was reported that the team was also able reduce CPU overhead in DirectX, Vulcan and Vulcan games to increase battery life.

This release also includes scaling low-resolution games to high-resolution displays. This could lead to better compatibility and a better overall gaming experience on QHD or UHD screens.

These Steam improvements are available in 50 new titles, on top of the recommended ones. These are the steps to get Steam up and running in beta.
