Chinese police search phones in China for Telegram, Twitter and Instagram as protests increase

Police in China are checking people’s phones for the presence of foreign apps, including Instagram, Twitter, and the encrypted messaging app Telegram, according to Reports by The Wall Street Journal CNBC. Both outlets report that Shanghai police have stopped people from reaching transportation hubs, but William Yang, East Asia correspondent for the German outlet, disagrees. In China’s capital city, Yang saysAuthorities are threatening to give them a warning and taking down personal information from anyone they encounter using foreign apps. “If they face resistance, police would say they could report the person,” he adds. Yang says that such stops can happen anywhere, including on the streets and at mall entrances. Chinese police threatened to arrest protestors if they did not delete their photos. According to BBC.
