A chick-fil-A Miami location is exploring a shorter, three-day work week.
Justin Lindsey, store operator, has recently spoken QSR MagazineHis team, which includes 18 store leaders and 20 frontline workers, has been successfully following a three day work week since February. According to him, prior to that, employees had been working 70-hour work weeks and skipping vacations in order achieve goals.
Lindsey explained, per QSR: “I realized, that I was asking a lot of these people.” “Honestly, I can’t do better.”
QSR Magazine reported that staff are divided into two “pods”, which alternate between three-day blocks of 13- to 14-hour shifts. (Chickfil-A is Famously, Sundays are closed.) Lindsey says there were some obstacles at the beginning and that not all employees have chosen to work shorter hours with longer shifts.
Lindsey stated that they were clear from the start. “We told them, ‘Look! This is uncharted territory. “I don’t know if this has ever been done before, but if this is your intention, you will be on a journey along with us.”
Lindsey stated that since the adoption of the abbreviated schedule, the store has seen 100% retention from the management. She also said that one job opening with the three day work week saw more than 420 applications.
QSR Magazine interviewed him and he said that he believes people would like to work in the industry. People enjoy the work. But they want some things to change, and I think that’s what this has shown — is that there are things that if we change it for the better, we’re going to make a lasting impact.”
