CENTCOM commander visit Navy nuclear submarine, Arabian Sea, amid tensions with Iran and Pakistan

Commander of the Defense Department’s Central Command(CENTCOM) visited a submarine nuclear powered in international waters Wednesday as part of a possible effort to communicate with adversaries in the region. 

Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla boarded the USS West Virginia. This is a U.S Navy Ohio class ship. Submarine with nuclear-powered ballistic missilesA news release stated that it was located in the Arabian Sea. 

During the visit, he saw the vessel’s capabilities. It operates worldwide under the U.S. Strategic Command.

Kurilla stated that he was “deeply impressed” with the crew on the USS West Virginia. Kurilla made this statement via CENTCOM. These submarines are the crown jewel in the nuclear triad. The West Virginia is a demonstration of the resilience, survival, readiness and capability of USCENTCOM’s and USSTRATCOM’s forces at sea.

The West Virginia is one of six ballistic-missile submarines stationed at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia. It can carry 20 submarine-launched ballistic weapons with multiple warheads.

The The Horn of Africa bounded the Arabian Sea.The Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Pakistan, as well as the Indian Ocean. 

Kurilla’s visit is coming as Pakistan fumes over Remarks of President Biden that the country is “one of the most dangerous nations in the world” for possessing “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.” The U.S. ambassador was summoned by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to express “disappointment” and “concern” over the remarks on Saturday.

Due to Iran’s support for Russia in the war in Ukraine, tensions could increase between Washington and Iran. Recent accusations by the Biden administration that Iran was lying about not providing drones to Russia’s military were made when Iran said so.
