While he may have comfortably beaten Gennady Glovkin in their trilogy fight, it was not so easy for Canelo.
After his unanimous decision victoryThe Mexican revealed that he was suffering from a wrist injury dating back to November 2021, when he clashed with Caleb Plant.
“It hurts everywhere,” Canelo said about his injury at the post-fight press conference. “I’ve had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight so I was like ‘it’s okay, later, later’.
“And then I started [to feel]It’s so bad that I have to have surgery.
“It was really bad, really bad. It’s not broken it’s a meniscus, it’s a wrist injury, not broken. It’s ligaments, like a knee injury or something like that…
“I’m going to take the time my body needs. Last year I fought four times in 11 months, so that’s why.
“But I need to take my time a little bit, maybe May, September I need to take my time.”
CaneloEven though he was victorious, Golovkin claimed that the injury could have affected his performance.
“I think towards the end of the fight today I started to get a bit fatigued,” Canelo said.
“That’s because we haven’t been able to work explosively in the gym, but despite all of the problems that we’ve had I’m really happy with my performance tonight.”
This injury could also go some way to explaining Canelo’s recent loss against Dmitry Bivol, for only the second defeat of his career, with the first coming against Floyd Mayweather JrReturned to 2013.
Canelo also has a history of collaborating with other organizations. Fatigue was the reason for the lossHe was unable to give his best effort.
“The truth is there is not much to say,” Canelo said in a recent interview with GQ Sports, “I lost the fight because I got tired.
“It was definitely that, the weight, a lot of things that happened. At the end of the day I lost and that’s how you have to take it.
“But, I am a winner and here I am, on the same path and with the same desire to move forward.
“I will have the opportunity to show you that I am better than him.
“He didn’t beat me by being better than me, I just didn’t give 100 percent, but that’s how it is and I had to lose.”
