Santa CruzFrancisco Villicana (22) was cleaning his gun at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, when it fired, according to the Salinas Police Department.
He was hit in the hand. Luis Alfredo Ferro Sanchez, 20 years old, was also shot in the hand. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Santa Cruz officer Francisco Villicana accidentally killed another man last week while cleaning his gun, police reported.

The department released a statement saying that Ferro-Sanchez accidentally fired a single shot while handling the firearm. However, the bullet continued to strike Ferro Sanchez in the torso.
Authorities didn’t say how they knew each other. Investigators believe that the incident was accidental but will refer it to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
According to authorities, Villicana was responsible for reporting the incident to police. He is a Santa Cruz Police Department employee since February 2022. Fox San Francisco reported.

“Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for the family and friends of Mr. Ferro-Sanchez,” said Santa Cruz Police Chief Bernie Escalante. “We will support their in any way we are able.”
