California high school footballers fly thin blue flag despite ban

A California high schoolSanta Clarita, despite the decision of a football coach to remove it from display, is flying the Thin Blue Line flag once more before its football games. 

Friday Night Saugus High School footballGolden Valley was defeated and the Thin Blue Line flag carried by one member of the team took the field, according to Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

The flag is displayed to Support law enforcementThe flag was seen as unwelcome and uncomfortable by some, so it was removed from the sidelines.

Mike Kuhlman (superintendent of William S. Hart Union School District) wrote a letter explaining that the flag was being retired. This decision was made by Jason Bornn, football coach.

“Given that some individuals have expressed concern that they interpret the Thin Blue Line flag to be divisive, it occurred to (the coach) that it’s possible that some players on the team might not be entirely enthusiastic about a symbol that is being used to represent the entire team,” Kuhlman said.

Coach stated that “in deference to his commitment towards inclusivity, kindness, respect (just loving people), and since the team never voted for this banner to be carried, Coach decided not to continue this practice.”

To finish the regular season, 8-2, the Saugus Centurions beat Golden Valley 31-13. 

“It’s very satisfying to get the win, the kids worked very hard for this,” Bornn said after the game, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. “We had to overcome tremendous adversity, injuries and the loss at West Ranch. I’m just proud of their effort and work ethic and what they were able to accomplish.”
