Brazilian Olympian Falls Miles From NYC Marathon Finish Line

  • Brazil’s Daniel Do Nascimento was 2 minutes ahead of his competitors, before he fell around the 21 mile mark.
  • First place was won by Evans Chebet and Sharon Lokedi of Kenya, respectively in the women’s race and men’s.
  • CBS reports that the NYC Marathon attracted 50,000 runners in its first year of full capacity.

The annual New York City Marathon was ended in heartbreak by the man who led most of the race, after he collapsed six-miles from the finish.

Brazil’s Daniel Do Nascimento (26.2 miles) ran briskly with a lead of two minutes over his competitors at half-way. After the 21-mile mark, he fell to his death. According to the New York Times, 

With the sizable lead, Do Nascimento — who competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — took an 18-second bathroom break just before he collapsed, According to the New York Post. The report states that his current condition is unknown. However, medical personnel were quick to assist him after he fell.

His fall enabled Evans Chebet from Kenya, aged 33, to win the top spot in men’s racing with a time that was two hours, eight minutes and 41 seconds. The NY Post reports that Sharon Lokedi (a fellow Kenyan), won the women’s race in two hours, 23 minutes and 23 seconds.

Reed Fischer, a professional runner, was present at Sunday’s race and told the NY Post that Do Nascimento may have been affected by the weather.

Fischer stated, “It was an opportunity to run smarter than I ran harder.” “You could feel the difference by mile 2. You’re probably sweating more quickly than you normally would. It hurts almost all the time.

According to the NY Times report the weather in New York City was warm and unseasonably hot, with temperatures hovering in the mid-60s and low 70s.

According to the Daily Mail, the 2022 NYC Marathon marked the first event that was operating at full capacity since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 50,000 runners participated in the race’s first year of full swing. CBS News reports.
