Bo Nix throws five touchdowns for No. 10 Oregon wins over No. 9 UCLA

Bo Nix threw five touchdowns and threw for 278 yards. No. 10 OregonThe No. No. 9 UCLA was handed its first loss of the campaign with a 45-30 win on Saturday.

The Bruins lost their nine-game winning streak in Eugene, which they haven’t won since 2004. UCLA (6-1 and 3-1)Since 2017, has not defeated the Ducks.

Nix, an Auburn transfer, has been a mobile threat. This year, he rushed for eight touchdowns and threw for 17 touchdowns. He completed 21 of his 28 passes against the Bruins. He had eight catches for 132 yard and two scores on Saturday, which was Troy Franklin’s favorite target.

UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was completing nearly 75% of his passes going into the game, threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Charbonnet ran for 136 yard and a score.

Oregon was the one to slow UCLA’s ground game. They allowed 186 yards of rushing. With an average distance of 211.5 yards per game, the Bruins ranked second within the Pac-12. However, the Ducks ran 273 yards per rush.

After exchanging field goals, the Ducks led 10-3 in the second quarter thanks to Nix’s touchdown pass of 17 yards to Terrance Ferguson. UCLA responded with Thompson Robinson’s 36 yard scoring pass to Keegan Johnson.

Franklin was able to catch a Nix 51-yard scoring pass to bring the Ducks back into front. Oregon recovered an offside kick and increased its lead with Jordan James’ 2-yard touchdown run.

Nicholas Barr-Mira scored a 44-yard field-goal for the Bruins in order to close the gap. Two penalties forced the Ducks to stop the game, but Franklin was able to catch a 2-yard pass by Nix, giving them a 31-13 lead at halftime.

After scoring a UCLA field goal, the Ducks extended their lead with Nix’s 17-yard scoring pass from tight end Cam McCormick.

Charbonnet ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the opening period. Bucky Irving’s 37 yard touchdown catch by the Ducks was the answer.

Nix is now the third Oregon quarterback to score five or more touchdowns per game since 1996. He joins Justin Herbert (1999) and Marcus Mariota (2014).

UCLA added a last-minute touchdown with Thompson-Robinson’s 22 yard pass to Jake Bobo.

This was the first meeting between top-10 Autzen teams since No. 3 Oregon defeated No. 7 Michigan State beat No. Last matchup between Pac-12 teams in the top 10, was No. 4 Oregon’s victory over No. 9 Stanford in 2010.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

UCLA, which rose to No. 13 had not been ranked among the top 10 in polls since 2015. Oregon was ranked No. 1 in the opening week of the season. 11 but their loss to Georgia knocked them out of the poll. The Ducks were ranked at No. 3 in the last season.

THE TAKEAWAY

UCLA: Chip Kelly returns to Eugene as the coach. He coached there from 2009 to 2012. After an undefeated 2010 season, the Ducks were well-known for their “blur” spread offense. This led them to the national championship. Kelly has a record of 0-4 against Oregon since he took over at UCLA in the latter part 2017. The Bruins’ six wins to start the season were the program’s most since 2005. UCLA was coming off of a bye.

Oregon: The Ducks also just came off a bye week. ESPN’s “College GameDay” was broadcast from Eugene for the first time since 2018. Sabrina Ionescu (ex-player for Oregon women’s basketball) was present at this game. Oregon is now 4-1 in conference play, for the first time since 2019. The game attracted 59.962, the fourth-largest crowd to Autzen since 2011 and fifth to be played in conference play.
