“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”: Ryan Coogler, Director of ‘Black Panther’ says that ‘Aquaman’ paved the way for Namor to be introduced

The success of Wakanda Forever: Black PantherThe box office shows that Wakanda’s fans are still enthusiastic about the film, despite the difficult transition without Chadwick Boseman.

This movie gives the supporting cast from the first movie more screentime, and Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta) makes his MCU debut in the role of a major antagonist. Although the underwater antagonist was a long-running part of Marvel comics’ universe, he has never been made into a film due to rights disputes and Marvel Studios’ preference for other villains. Ryan Coogler was delighted to bring the character alive.

A recent interview was conducted with UproxxCoogler spoke about how Namor was born. He believes Jason Momoa’s portrayal Aquaman in DC showed that there was a huge market for underwater characters.

Coogler mentioned, “I do think that having Aquaman out in the world, in film language, and being successful in the marketplace, I think it was a great bit of indirect guidance for us to lean into the things that made Namor different from Aquaman.”

Speaking about the marketplace, he said, “Just out of respect to the audience because a lot of people saw that movie. Many people love this movie. We had to put our heads down, wear blinders, and create our movie. But, we also had to be aware of the potential responses from the marketplace and what they might be interested. I think giving people something different, if you can give somebody something good, that’s also unique, I think it’s always better. We wanted to lean into the things that make those two characters different from each other because they have a lot of other similarities in publishing.”

Coogler’s remarks came on the same evening as Dwayne Johnson congratulated the Black Panther team on the Marvel film debuting to the highest-ever box office result for the month of November.

Johnson, Black AdamIt has been the highest-rated film in the entire world since its premiere last October. The film’s team was praised for their film, calling it the “biggest opening ever” for the month November. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💪🏾🥃That’s a lot of happy movie goers around the world. Beautiful!!! Can’t wait to see the movie,” and signed off as Black Adam.

This is not the first instance of the studios’ “friendship”, which has only grown more interesting with the announcement by Peter Safran and James Gunn that they will co-run DC Studios.
