Bill Maher hosts “Real Time”.The focus of the Democratic obsession in identity politics was brought to our attention by a question about who they will nominate for 2024.
On Friday, Maher spoke with Democratic Colorado Governor. Jared Polis asked Maher if America is “over the gay hipp” after his successful reelection bid to become America’s first openly homosexual governor. He also noted the election of two lesbian governors from Oregon and Massachusetts. Polis thanked the voters for not caring about who they are, but rather what they stand for.
“Does it really make sense to run for president?” Maher asked Polis, as he shook his head in response to the presidential buzz. “Because they are very fond of checking boxes. It’s hard to imagine a ticket on the Democratic side today that would only have two straight, white men. It is impossible to imagine. They need to tick boxes. Each one should be checked.
Polis said, “First of all I have the job and love it.” “I’m really passionate about Colorado, I hope everybody visits Colorado, enjoys Colorado…”
Maher interjected, “So you’ll not run for president.”Â
Polis responded, “I love the job that I have. It’s the job that I want.” This drew chuckles from the audience, who laughed at his non-answer.

Polis stated, “It’s not bad that the Democratic Party wants America to look like.” I think it’s good that there is a party for race, gender and other issues. You want America to look like you. People should be able look in the mirror and see that there is someone like them in Congress and on the Supreme Court. It’s a great thing.
It is a good thing. It is, however, a good thing. Maher asked. “I think that’s why people sometimes hesitate about the Democrats. It is more important than things like merit, which should be more important? Does it have more importance than science or facts?Â
It should never stand in the way merit, right? Polis said, “You always want to have the best president or the best member Congress.” Polis replied, “But I think it’s thrilling, at least where Democrats are, and I believe most Americans are, that these things don’t really matter. I mean, at look at President Barack Obama, right, first African-American president of the United States of America… These barriers that are in people’s minds still, like somehow I can’t do this, I think these are falling away, and there really is no barrier for anybody with any background and matter their race who they are who they love their faith or no faith at all. There are no barriers to serving in any office.
Later, Maher brought up the topic with his guest Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who was mentioned as a possible 2024 hopeful. President Bidenis not seeking reelection.Â
Robert Costa, CBS News’ correspondent for CBS News, was a fellow panelist and predicted that Khanna and Polis would both run as long the president does.Â
It’s perfect because there are no straight White men. Straight White guys are not something you want. Sorry Gavin Newsom! Maher laughed.

“I will say this… I don’t think it should matter,” Khanna responded. It doesn’t matter if someone is straight, gay, or Indian-American. I think what should matter is what is your vision for this country… That’s the only thing that should matter whether someone’s White, straight, gay. Indian, whatever. It should  absolutely no bearing.”
Maher replied, “It shouldn’t be, but it will.” “Look, there is no dog in the fight. I’m not running to be president. I don’t care whether it’s two White guys or two f—in’ Purple people. I’m just saying that, despite their identity politics and diversity, the Democratic Party will never have two white men. They might not. That’s just what I meant to say. This cannot be. You have to be – tick one of the boxes. It’s possible to do so.

The HBO star then listed potential 2024 candidates, compiled by Frank Bruni (New York Times contributing opinion writer), many of whom are on the diversity list.Â
Maher dismissed the first quickly. Kamala Harris is Vice PresidentHe joked that he should run for president of the University of Santa Barbara.

“Pete Buttigieg? Gay. “Great,” Maher stated before making a check gesture using his hand. “Governor Gretchen Whitmer?” Yep. Senator Amy Klobuchar? Ro Khanna? Governor Jared Polis Gavin Newsom? Sorry. Und Senator Elizabeth Warren.
“Anybody on that List you believe is better than any other?” Maher asked Khanna about Khanna’s inclusion on the list.
Khanna replied “Joe Biden,”
Maher complained, “Oh for f —‘s Sake, c’mon.”Â

Khanna said, “I’ll tell ya the one thing the Democrats need.” We must have a clear vision for patriotism. This country has made incredible progress on the issue of race. We’ve made great progress in the area of gender. We are the best country in the globe… and I think that that message of inclusion, as well as a vision for this country-“
“And we should be celebrating all the achievements.” Maher exclaimed. “Not being so down on yourself!” This is a Democratic problem you have to solve.

Khanna stated that Liz Truss was the only thing that allowed a British Indian prime minister to be possible. “My grandfather was imprisoned for four years along with Gandhi.” [for] Indian independence. Two generations later, there is an Indian leader in Britain. It is hard to deny that history is moving forward.
Maher said, “Absolutely.”Â
