Biden’s COVID booster pitch, rooted in fear of deadly winter surge, likely to fail

The last thing President Biden was wantedWe are talking about COVID shots, which will be available two weeks before midterms.

Yet, he was there yesterday, encouraging people to get their booster shots. He also rolled up his sleeves and got his booster.

This is from the man who cheerfully declared that “the pandemic has ended” months ago. It’s not.

I assume the president, who? Developed the coronavirus by himselfIt would have been possible to wait until after the election. I believe the greatest fear at the White House lies in the coming winter wave, which could bring the president’s own management of vaccine programs under intense political scrutiny.

Recent data showed that about 4% of Americans – roughly 11 million people – have gotten the new booster.

The Washington Post reports that half of Americans know very little to nothing about the booster, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll.

Why? Because the administration stopped talking. The administration stopped talking about it in the middle of an election cycleThat favors Republicans and how they deal with Ukraine, gas prices, and other issues, makes it a less popular issue.

Biden’s speech yesterday was a great endorsement of the vaccine program. However, I wish Biden every success in convincing people to get this booster. It is specifically designed for the Omicron Omicron variant. Many people have just stopped listening to the program because of its politicization and conflicting advice from the CDC.

Biden advised that he vaccinated his children. “Update your COVID vaccine. It’s incredibly effective, but the truth is, not enough people are getting it. We’ve got to change that so we can all have a safe and healthy holiday season.”

Biden’s pitch was that, except for the immunocompromised, people should view such boosters like an annual flu shot. (A nasty flu season is also predicted, and many young children are being diagnosed with RSV. This respiratory infection can cause serious injury.

He also pointed out that Americans are still dying from COVID every day – the average is 350, down from about 500 – and reminded us that we’ve already lost more than 1 million of our fellow citizens.

The president’s argument is that the new booster is widely available, free of charge. He said the administration had sent out many millions of home test kits – though he took a shot at some of “our friends in Congress” for not approving further funding – and that if you get the virus, you can get free Paxlovid to help in treatment.

But as we now know, getting vaccinated doesn’t prevent you from getting COVID. In most cases, however, it does not mean that you will have milder symptoms if you get the virus.

The same time, however, it is important to note that the Expected winter surgeIt could be a completely new virus variant that renders Omicron’s targeting obsolete. We don’t know.

In short, Biden is sufficiently worried about a cold-weather disaster that he was willing to muddle his midterm message with yesterday’s speech. It will probably have very little impact, just like his other vaccine appeals.
